Hearts is a classic card game for four players, played with a standard 52-card deck. The objective of the game is to avoid taking penalty points by collecting the least number of heart cards and the queen of spades.

Gameplay

The game is played in a series of rounds. In each round, players are dealt 13 cards. One card is turned face up in the center of the table to determine the trump suit. Players then take turns playing cards, following suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a heart or the queen of spades.

The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless a trump card is played. Trump cards always win, regardless of their rank. The player who wins the trick collects the cards and adds them to their pile.

Penalty Points

At the end of each round, players count the number of heart cards and the queen of spades in their pile. Each heart card is worth one penalty point, and the queen of spades is worth 13 penalty points. The player with the fewest penalty points at the end of the game wins.

Special Rules

* Shooting the Moon: If a player takes all 13 hearts and the queen of spades in a single round, they "shoot the moon" and receive a bonus of 26 penalty points.

* Passing Cards: After the first trick, players may pass three cards to the player on their left. These cards must be played in the same order they were received.

* Breaking Hearts: Hearts cannot be played until a heart card has been led. Once a heart has been led, players may play hearts at any time.

Hearts is a game of skill and strategy. Players must carefully consider which cards to play and which cards to pass. Some basic strategies include:
