Rules:

Play with 2 or 4 players, using 32 cards. Each player has three cards and up to three lives. Score points by playing cards of the same suit, with face cards worth 10 and aces worth 11. Reach 31 points to win the round, or lose a life if you have the lowest score.

Choose from four moves each round:

♦️ Knock to indicate the last round once you believe you won't have the lowest hand-score.

Objective:

The goal of Thirty One is to be the first player to reach or exceed a score of 31 points by playing cards from their hand.

Setup:

* Use a standard 52-card deck.

* Deal 3 cards to each player.

* Place the remaining cards face down in a pile to form the draw pile.

Gameplay:

* The player to the left of the dealer goes first.

* On their turn, a player can:

* Play a card: Play a card from their hand onto the discard pile. The card must be of the same suit or rank as the top card on the discard pile.

* Draw a card: Draw a card from the draw pile.

* Knock: If the player's hand totals 31 or more points, they can knock and end their turn.

Scoring:

* Cards: Each card is worth its face value (except face cards, which are worth 10).

* Aces: Aces are worth 11 points.

* Thirty One: If a player plays a card that brings their hand total to exactly 31, they score an additional 10 points.

* Going Over: If a player's hand total exceeds 31, they lose all their points for that round.

* Scat: If a player plays a Queen of Spades, they can "scat" all other players. The other players must then discard their entire hands and lose all their points for that round.

Winning:

* The first player to reach or exceed 31 points wins the game.

* If multiple players reach 31 points on the same turn, the player with the highest hand total wins.

Blitz Variation:

* In the Blitz variation, players play with two decks of cards.

* Players draw 5 cards at the start of the game.

* The draw pile is replenished with cards from the second deck as needed.

* The game proceeds as in the standard version, but with the increased number of cards in play.

Tips:

* Pay attention to the cards that have been played to predict what cards your opponents might have.

* Try to keep a balanced hand with both high and low cards.
