Overview
Whist is a classic trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships. The goal of the game is to be the first partnership to reach a predetermined number of tricks (usually 7).
Gameplay
* The deck consists of 52 standard playing cards.
* Players are dealt 13 cards each.
* One player leads with any card.
* Players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot, they may trump with a higher trump card or discard any card.
* The highest card of the suit led or the highest trump played wins the trick.
* The player who wins the trick leads the next card.
Trump Suit
* The trump suit is determined by the first card played.
* The suit of the first card played is the trump suit for the entire hand.
* Trump cards are always higher than non-trump cards, regardless of rank.
Scoring
* The first partnership to reach 7 tricks wins the hand.
* If both partnerships reach 7 tricks, the hand is a tie.
* If neither partnership reaches 7 tricks, the partnership with the most tricks wins the hand.
Variations
There are numerous variations of Whist, including:
* American Whist: Similar to Whist, but with a different scoring system.
* Napoleon: A more complex variation played with a 32-card deck.
* Hearts: A variation where the hearts suit is always trump.
* Spades: A variation where the spades suit is always trump.
Strategy
* Lead with your strongest cards: Lead with your highest trump cards or your highest cards in the suit you want to establish.
* Follow suit: If you can follow suit, do so. This will help your partner win tricks.
* Trump strategically: Only trump when you have a good chance of winning the trick.
* Count cards: Keep track of the cards that have been played to help you make informed decisions.
* Communicate with your partner: Use signals or subtle hints to communicate your intentions to your partner.
