Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. History
The territory of present-day Belarus has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The first known state in the region was the Principality of Polotsk, which emerged in the 9th century. In the 13th century, Belarus became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After the Union of Lublin in 1569, Belarus became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
In the 18th century, Belarus was partitioned between Russia and Prussia. The Russian Empire annexed the eastern part of Belarus in 1793 and the western part in 1795. Belarus remained under Russian rule until the Russian Revolution in 1917.
After the Russian Revolution, Belarus became part of the Soviet Union. In 1991, Belarus declared independence from the Soviet Union.

Belarus is a republic with a presidential system of government. The president is the head of state and government. The current president is Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994.
