Introduction

INDYCAR is a premier open-wheel racing series sanctioned by INDYCAR, LLC. It is considered the top level of open-wheel racing in North America and one of the most prestigious racing series in the world. INDYCAR races are held on oval tracks, road courses, and street circuits.

History

The origins of INDYCAR can be traced back to the American Automobile Association (AAA) National Championship, which was first held in 1905. In 1956, the United States Auto Club (USAC) took over sanctioning of the series, which became known as the USAC National Championship. In 1979, a group of team owners formed Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) and began sanctioning their own series, the CART PPG Indy Car World Series. In 1996, CART and USAC merged to form the Indy Racing League (IRL). In 2008, the IRL merged with Champ Car World Series to form the current INDYCAR series.

Cars

INDYCAR cars are Dallara DW12 chassis powered by 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engines. The cars produce over 700 horsepower and can reach speeds of over 230 mph. INDYCAR cars are designed to be aerodynamically efficient and to provide maximum downforce.

Tracks

INDYCAR races are held on a variety of tracks, including oval tracks, road courses, and street circuits. The most famous INDYCAR race is the Indianapolis 500, which is held on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Other popular INDYCAR tracks include Road America, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and Sonoma Raceway.

Drivers

INDYCAR is home to some of the best drivers in the world. Current and former INDYCAR drivers include Scott Dixon, Will Power, Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud, and Tony Kanaan. INDYCAR drivers compete for the Astor Cup, which is awarded to the driver who wins the most points over the course of the season.
