History

KCTV5's origins trace back to 1953 when KMBC-TV (now KSHB-TV) launched as the first television station in Kansas City. In 1969, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the establishment of a second VHF channel in the market, and KMBC's owner, Metromedia, applied for the license.

The station signed on the air on December 15, 1971, as WDAF-TV, named after the former owner of KMBC, the "Western Dairy and Food Company." It initially operated as an independent station, broadcasting a mix of syndicated programming and local news.

In 1994, WDAF became the CBS affiliate for Kansas City, replacing KSHB-TV, which had switched to NBC. The station also changed its call letters to KCTV to reflect its new affiliation.
