Kigo is a captivating Japanese board game that blends strategy, skill, and a touch of luck. Played on a 9x9 grid, the objective of Kigo is to capture your opponent's pieces while protecting your own.

Gameplay:

The game begins with each player placing their pieces on the board, consisting of one king, two advisors, two elephants, two chariots, two horses, and five pawns. Players take turns moving their pieces according to specific rules:

* King: Moves one square in any direction.

* Advisor: Moves diagonally one square at a time.

* Elephant: Moves two squares diagonally, jumping over the first square.

* Chariot: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

* Horse: Moves in an L-pattern, two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly.

* Pawn: Moves one square forward or diagonally forward.

Capture:

When a piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent's piece, it captures the opposing piece and removes it from the board. However, there are exceptions:

* The king cannot be captured.

* The advisor cannot be captured by a chariot.

* The elephant cannot be captured by a horse.

Check and Checkmate:

When a player's king is threatened by an opponent's piece, the king is said to be "in check." The player in check must immediately move the king out of check or block the threat. If the player cannot escape check, it is "checkmate," and the game is over.

Strategy and Tactics:

Kigo requires a combination of strategic planning and tactical maneuvering. Players must control the center of the board, protect their king, and coordinate their pieces effectively. Common strategies include:

* Opening Principles: Develop your pieces early, control the center, and castle your king.

* Endgame Techniques: Promote pawns to powerful pieces and use discovered attacks to gain an advantage.

* Tactics: Use forks, pins, and skewers to capture multiple enemy pieces or restrict their movement.

* Chu Shogi: Played on a 9x9 board with additional pieces.

* Dai Shogi: Played on a 15x15 board with a vast array of pieces.

* Tenjiku Shogi: Played on a 9x9 board with a unique set of pieces and rules.
