Nepal Weather

Nepal, a landlocked country nestled in the Himalayas, experiences a diverse climate due to its varied topography. The country can be broadly divided into three climatic zones: the Terai, the Hilly Region, and the Himalayan Region.

Terai Region

The Terai region, located in the southern part of Nepal, is a narrow strip of land bordering India. It has a subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Temperatures during the summer months (March to May) can reach up to 40°C (104°F), while in the winter (December to February), they drop to around 10°C (50°F). The Terai region receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.

Hilly Region

The Hilly Region lies north of the Terai and covers the central part of Nepal. It has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters. Temperatures in the summer (March to May) range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), while in the winter (December to February), they can drop to below 0°C (32°F). The Hilly Region receives moderate rainfall during the monsoon season, but it is less intense than in the Terai.

Himalayan Region

The Himalayan Region encompasses the northern part of Nepal and includes the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest. The climate in this region is alpine, with cold temperatures and high precipitation. Summers (June to August) are short and cool, with temperatures averaging around 10°C (50°F), while winters (December to February) are long and harsh, with temperatures dropping below -20°C (-4°F). The Himalayan Region receives heavy snowfall during the winter months.

Rainfall and Monsoon

Nepal experiences a monsoon climate, with most of the rainfall occurring during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the country, particularly in the Terai and Hilly regions. The average annual rainfall in Nepal ranges from 1,500 mm (59 in) in the Terai to over 5,000 mm (197 in) in the Himalayan Region.

Climate Change

Nepal is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. The country is experiencing rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and an increase in extreme weather events. These changes are impacting agriculture, water resources, and the livelihoods of millions of people. Nepal is taking steps to address climate change, including developing climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
