Introduction
Nickel is a classic card game that combines elements of rummy and poker. It is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and is suitable for 2 to 4 players. The objective of the game is to be the first player to meld all of their cards into sets or runs and score points.
Gameplay
Setup
To start the game, each player is dealt 5 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile. One card is turned over from the draw pile to create the discard pile.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in clockwise order. On your turn, you have two options:
* Draw a card: You can draw the top card from either the draw pile or the discard pile.
* Meld cards: You can meld cards from your hand into sets or runs. A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank, such as three aces or four kings. A run consists of three or more cards in sequence, such as 5-6-7 or 10-J-Q.
Scoring
When you meld a set or run, you score points based on the cards used:
* Set: 5 points
* Run: 10 points
* Nickel (5 of a kind): 15 points
Nickel
A special combination in Nickel is called a "nickel," which is five cards of the same rank. If you meld a nickel, you immediately win the game and score 25 points.
Wild Cards
There are no wild cards in Nickel.
Ending the Game
The game ends when one player has melded all of their cards. That player wins the game and scores the total points for all their melds.
Variations
There are many variations of Nickel, including:
* Partnership Nickel: Players play in pairs, and the points scored by each player are added together.
* Cutthroat Nickel: Players play against each other, and the player with the lowest score at the end of the game loses.
* No Nickel Nickel: The nickel combination is not allowed.
Strategy
* Meld early: The sooner you meld your cards, the more points you will score.
* Block your opponents: Pay attention to the cards your opponents are discarding and try to block them from melding.
* Go for nickels: If you have the opportunity to meld a nickel, do it immediately to win the game.
* Don't be afraid to draw: If you can't meld your cards, don't be afraid to draw from the draw pile or discard pile.
