Odia (Oriya) Calendar 2023

The Odia (Oriya) Calendar 2023, also known as the Kalinga calendar, is a traditional lunisolar calendar used in the Indian state of Odisha. It is based on the ancient Hindu calendar system and follows the Saka era, which began in 78 CE.

Structure

The Odia calendar is divided into 12 months, each of which has 30 or 31 days. The months are named after various festivals, deities, or astronomical events. The year begins on the first day of Chaitra (March-April) and ends on the last day of Phalguna (February-March).

Months

1. Chaitra: Begins on the day of the vernal equinox and is dedicated to the goddess Chamundi.

2. Baisakha: Associated with the birth of Lord Buddha and the festival of Akshaya Tritiya.

3. Jyaistha: Named after the constellation Jyeshtha and is known for its hot and humid weather.

4. Asadha: Coincides with the monsoon season and is associated with the festival of Rath Yatra.

5. Sravana: Dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a period of intense religious observance.

6. Bhadra: Named after the constellation Bhadra and is associated with the harvest festival of Nuakhai.

7. Aswina: Begins with the festival of Durga Puja and is considered the beginning of autumn.

8. Kartika: Dedicated to Lord Kartikeya and is known for its festive atmosphere.

9. Margashira: Named after the constellation Mrigashira and is associated with the winter solstice.

10. Pausha: The coldest month of the year and is dedicated to Lord Surya.

11. Magha: Associated with the festival of Makar Sankranti and is known for its kite-flying traditions.

12. Phalguna: The last month of the year and is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Holidays and Festivals

The Odia calendar includes numerous holidays and festivals, many of which have religious significance. Some of the major festivals celebrated in Odisha according to this calendar include:

* Makar Sankranti (January): Celebrates the winter solstice.

* Ratha Yatra (June-July): A grand festival dedicated to Lord Jagannath.

* Nuakhai (August-September): Celebrates the harvest season.

* Durga Puja (September-October): A festival honoring the goddess Durga.

* Diwali (October-November): The festival of lights.

* Kartik Purnima (November): Celebrates the full moon day in the month of Kartika.

Significance

The Odia calendar is an integral part of the cultural and religious life of the Odia people. It is used to determine auspicious dates for weddings, festivals, and other important events. The calendar also provides information about the phases of the moon, the position of the sun and stars, and the agricultural seasons.
