The app has been developed for Panjtan Society of Victoria, Inc, also known as PSV Melbourne. The Panjtan Society of Victoria (PSV) is a non-profit registered organization of the Shia Ithna Asheri Muslim community of Melbourne, Australia (Melbourne Shia Community, Shias in Melbourne, Shias in Australia).

It is serving the religious and educational needs of over 1000 members of the Urdu-speaking community of India, Pakistan, East Africa, Singapore and Afghanistan. The society was formed in 1989 on a very small scale, consisting of just a few members. With the passage of time, as the Shia Ithna-Asheri started migrating to this part of the world, the society has grown dramatically in terms of both members and its activities.

Panjtan, also known as Five Hundred, is a popular trick-taking card game played with a standard 52-card deck. It is enjoyed by players of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced enthusiasts. The game combines elements of strategy, skill, and luck, making it an engaging and rewarding experience for all involved.

Gameplay Overview

Panjtan is played with four players in two partnerships. The goal of the game is to be the first team to reach 500 points. Points are earned by taking tricks and fulfilling contracts.

The game begins with the dealer shuffling the deck and dealing 10 cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the stock.

Each round, one player bids on the number of tricks they believe their team can take. The bid can range from 0 to 13. The player to the left of the bidder then has the option to double the bid, which increases the potential points earned but also the risk of losing.

Once the bid is set, the players take turns playing cards. The player who leads plays any card they choose. The other players must then follow suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card.

The highest card of the suit led wins the trick. The player who wins the trick collects the cards and places them face down in front of them.

Scoring

Points are scored based on the number of tricks taken and the fulfillment of contracts.

* Tricks: Each trick taken is worth 10 points.

* Contracts: If a team meets or exceeds their bid, they receive 10 points for each trick bid.

* Doubled Contracts: If a team successfully fulfills a doubled contract, they receive 20 points for each trick bid.

* Nil Bids: If a player bids 0 and takes no tricks, they earn 100 points.

* Shooting the Moon: If a team takes all 13 tricks, they earn 250 points.

Strategy and Tactics

Panjtan requires a combination of strategy and tactical decision-making. Players must carefully consider their bids, choose the right cards to play, and communicate effectively with their partner.

* Bidding: The bid should be based on the strength of the team's hand and the likelihood of fulfilling the contract.

* Card Play: Players should lead with strong cards when possible and hold back their high cards for later in the round.

* Communication: Partners should communicate with each other through subtle signals and gestures to convey information about their hands and intentions.

* Three-Handed Panjtan: Played with three players in two partnerships.
