Stoke City Football ClubHistory
Stoke City Football Club, affectionately known as "The Potters," is an English professional football club based in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Founded in 1863, it is one of the oldest football clubs in the world and a founding member of the Football League in 1888.
Stoke City's early years were marked by success in regional competitions, but it was not until the late 19th century that the club began to make its mark on the national stage. Under the guidance of manager Arthur Turner, Stoke won the FA Cup in 1901, becoming the first non-London club to lift the trophy.
The club continued to compete in the top flight of English football throughout the early 20th century, but it was not until the 1970s that it experienced another major success. Under the management of Tony Waddington, Stoke won the League Cup in 1972, beating Chelsea 2-1 in the final.
The Britannia Stadium
In 1997, Stoke City moved into the newly built Britannia Stadium, which replaced the Victoria Ground as their home ground. The stadium has a capacity of over 27,000 and has hosted several international matches, including a UEFA Euro 2004 qualifier between England and Turkey.
Premier League Era
Stoke City spent many years in the lower divisions of English football before finally returning to the Premier League in 2008. Under the management of Tony Pulis, the club established itself as a mid-table side, known for its physical style of play.
Stoke City remained in the Premier League for ten consecutive seasons, reaching the FA Cup final in 2011 and the Europa League round of 32 in 2012. However, the club was relegated back to the Championship in 2018.
Current Status
Stoke City currently plays in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. The club is managed by Alex Neil and is aiming to return to the Premier League.
