Hardwood Hearts is a trick-taking card game for four players in fixed partnerships, similar to Spades and Hearts. The goal of the game is to be the first partnership to reach a predetermined number of points, typically 100 or 150.

Gameplay

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. The cards are ranked from high to low: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The hearts suit is always trump, and spades are the second-highest suit.

The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer leading any card. The other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a heart or a spade. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless a heart or spade is played, in which case the highest heart or spade wins.

The winner of the trick leads the next card. The game continues until all 13 tricks have been played.

Scoring

Each trick taken by a partnership is worth 1 point. In addition, there are two special bonuses:

* Hearts: If a partnership takes all 13 hearts, they receive a bonus of 13 points.

* Void: If a player has no cards of a particular suit, they receive a bonus of 10 points.

Penalties

There are two penalties in Hardwood Hearts:

* Shooting the moon: If a partnership takes all 26 tricks, they receive a penalty of -26 points.

* Bagging: If a partnership takes no tricks, they receive a penalty of -10 points.

Winning

The first partnership to reach the predetermined number of points wins the game. If both partnerships reach the same number of points in the same round, the partnership with the most tricks taken wins.
