Identity V is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game where four Survivors attempt to escape a Manor controlled by one Hunter. The Survivors' primary objective is to decode five Cipher Machines scattered around the map. These machines require cooperation and time, making them vulnerable to the Hunter's pursuit. Once all five are decoded, the Survivors must open one of two Exit Gates and escape to win. Survivors possess unique abilities that aid in decoding, rescuing teammates, and evading the Hunter, but they are weaker in direct combat.

The Hunter's goal is to eliminate all Survivors before they can escape. They patrol the Manor, using their own unique abilities to track down and incapacitate Survivors. Hunters can down Survivors by hitting them twice. Once downed, a Survivor is tied to a Rocket Chair, and after a set time, they are eliminated from the game. Hunters must strategically manage their time and resources to prevent the Survivors from completing their objective. The Hunter wins if they eliminate three or more Survivors.

The gameplay involves a constant cat-and-mouse dynamic. Survivors must balance decoding progress with avoiding the Hunter, while the Hunter must efficiently hunt down Survivors and prevent them from completing the decoding process. The game features a variety of maps, each with its own unique layout and strategic points. Character selection is crucial, as each character possesses distinct skills that can significantly impact the outcome of the match. Teamwork and communication are essential for Survivors to succeed, while Hunters rely on strategic thinking and map awareness to dominate the game.
