Ingress is a mobile augmented reality game developed by Niantic Labs, now Niantic, Inc., that transforms the real world into a global game board. Players choose a faction, either the Enlightened or the Resistance, and compete for control of virtual portals located at real-world points of interest such as public art, historical markers, and unique architecture.

The core gameplay revolves around capturing and linking these portals. Players physically travel to the location of a portal and interact with it through their mobile device. Capturing a neutral portal or neutralizing an enemy portal requires deploying resonators, eight virtual devices that power the portal. Once a portal is controlled by a faction, players can link it to other controlled portals. Creating links requires keys, virtual items obtained by hacking portals. Three linked portals create a control field, a triangular area that covers the ground between the portals. The larger the control field, the more Mind Units (MU) it captures, a metric used to track the global score of each faction.

The Enlightened, represented by the color green, believe that the exotic matter (XM) emanating from the portals is a beneficial force that will uplift humanity. They embrace the influence of the Shapers, a mysterious entity believed to be the source of the XM. The Resistance, represented by the color blue, view the XM and the Shapers with suspicion, believing they pose a threat to human free will. They fight to control the portals and prevent the Shapers from influencing humanity.

The narrative of Ingress unfolds through various in-game elements. Players can discover snippets of backstory and lore through the scanner, the in-game interface used to interact with portals. Media drops, released periodically by Niantic, provide further clues and expand the narrative. Anomalies, real-world events where players from both factions gather to compete for control of specific portals, also play a significant role in the ongoing story. The outcome of these events can influence the direction of the narrative.

Beyond capturing and linking portals, players can engage in various other activities. Hacking portals provides players with items such as resonators, XMP bursters (used to attack enemy portals), and portal keys. Deploying higher-level resonators strengthens a portal, making it more resistant to attacks. Players can also upgrade resonators deployed by other members of their faction. Linking portals requires strategic planning, as links cannot cross existing links. Creating control fields is a key objective, as they contribute to the faction's global score.

Ingress encourages exploration and social interaction. Players often collaborate with other members of their faction to coordinate attacks, defend portals, and create large control fields. The game fosters a sense of community, with players organizing meetups and events.
