Centro Esportivo Copacabana is a Brazilian football club based in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The club was founded in 1909 and has a long and storied history, having won numerous titles at the state and national level.
History
The club was founded on June 15, 1909, by a group of young men from the Copacabana neighborhood. The club's first president was Oscar Mota, and its first coach was Henrique Castro. Centro Esportivo Copacabana quickly established itself as one of the top clubs in Rio de Janeiro, winning the state championship in 1911 and 1912.
In the 1920s, Centro Esportivo Copacabana continued to be a major force in Brazilian football. The club won the state championship again in 1923 and 1927, and also won the national championship in 1926.
The 1930s were a difficult time for Centro Esportivo Copacabana. The club was relegated to the second division in 1933, and did not return to the top flight until 1939.
In the 1940s, Centro Esportivo Copacabana enjoyed a resurgence. The club won the state championship again in 1942 and 1943, and also won the national championship in 1944.
The 1950s were a golden age for Centro Esportivo Copacabana. The club won the state championship five times in a row from 1950 to 1954, and also won the national championship in 1951 and 1953.
In the 1960s, Centro Esportivo Copacabana began to decline. The club was relegated to the second division in 1967, and did not return to the top flight until 1971.
In the 1970s, Centro Esportivo Copacabana continued to struggle. The club was relegated to the second division again in 1974, and did not return to the top flight until 1980.
In the 1980s, Centro Esportivo Copacabana enjoyed a brief resurgence. The club won the state championship again in 1981, and also won the national championship in 1982.
